Emergencies can happen at any time. Be ready to cope on your own for at least 72 hours before help arrives. When there is an emergency, such as a bad winter storm, hurricane, flood, or fire – you should be ready to cope on your own for at least the first 72 hours.

The Town of Antigonish works with the Fire Department, By-law Enforcement, and other protective services to keep residents safe, but being prepared at home is the best protection for you and your family.

 Emergency Preparedness 1

Quick Checklist

◻ Know the risks in our area
◻ Make an emergency plan
◻ Build a 72-hour emergency kit
◻ Stay informed about Comfort Centres
◻ Keep important phone numbers handy

Know the Risks

Risks can include, but are not limited to:

  • Winter Storms
  • Flooding
  • Wildfires
  • Hurricanes
  • House Fires
  • Chemical Spills
  • Road Collisions

Think about:

  • How long could you manage without power or water?
  • Do you have extra medicine, food, and water?
  • What if you had to leave home right away?
  • Alternatively, what if you must leave your home in a hurry?

If authorities call an evacuation order, it means you must leave immediately because your home is at risk or no longer safe.

Make a Plan

Your plan should answer: What do we do? Where do we go? What do we need?

Include:

  • Location of fire extinguisher, main water valve, electrical panel, gas shut-off, floor drain
  • Contact info for family and friends
  • Health information for household members
  • A personal support network (at least three trusted people who can help during an emergency; include someone outside the region if possible)

Keep copies of your plan:

  • In your kit
  • At home, at work, and in your car
  • With your support network

Build a 72-Hour Emergency Kit

Your kit should be easy to carry and checked twice a year.

Include:

  • Your emergency plan & support network contacts
  • 6L water per person (2L per day)
  • Non-perishable food & manual can opener
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription & allergy medications (3-day supply minimum)
  • Infant formula or pet supplies (if needed)
  • Flashlight & radio (wind-up or battery) + spare batteries
  • Extra house & car keys
  • Cash in small bills
  • Copies of ID and key documents (driver’s license, birth certificate, insurance)
